FLIES & HONEY BEES

FLIES are a type of insect belonging to the order Diptera, known for their rapid reproduction and spread of disease, with about 1,60,000 species worldwide. They spread cholera, typhoid by carrying germs from excrement, rotting garbage. Their life cycle consists of 4 stages: egg, larva (maggot), pupa and adult fly. Flies are attracted to humans because our bodies constantly emit the heat, moisture, and chemical odours they need to survive and reproduce.

The Scientific Names of the Most Common Flies

  • True flies:  Diptera.
  • House fly: Musca domestica
  • Fruit fly: Drosophila melanogaster
  • Common mosquito: Culex pipiens
  • Blow fly (Greenbottle fly): Lucilia sericata

Interesting Facts About Flies
Flies are incredibly agile survivors equipped with compound eyes for lightning-fast reflexes, chemical sensors on their legs that allow them to "taste" with their feet, and specialized wings that function as natural gyroscopes.

Lifespan and Breeding
Most flies live about 21 days. A female fly can lay hundreds, or even thousands depending on the species, of eggs in her short life.

Diet
Flies feed on rotting food, garbage, and human excrement, spreading diseases such as cholera and typhoid.

Characteristics
They have a pair of fins and can see 360 degrees with the help of compound eyes.

Importance
Flies play an important role in maintaining the balance of the environment and act as food for birds, fish and other insects.

Do Flies Sleep?
Yes, Flies are diurnal, meaning they are active during the day. As the sun sets, they seek out safe, dark, and sheltered places to "nap" or sleep for several hours.

HONEY BEES are highly active and social insects, making honey from flower nectar and maintaining ecological balance through pollination. A hive can have up to 60,000 bees, including 1 queen, some males and the rest worker bees. They can flap their wings 200 times per second and have the ability to recognise human faces.

The Scientific Name For The Most Common Honey Bees

  • Western/European Honey Bee: Apis mellifera
  • Eastern Honey Bee: Apis cerana
  • Giant Honey Bee: Apis dorsata
  • Red Dwarf Honey Bee: Apis florea

  • Interesting Facts About Bees
    • Amazing work: To produce 500 grams of honey, bees have to sit on about 2 million flowers and travel 90,000 km.
    • Flight speed and power: Bees can fly at about 15-16 miles per hour.
    • Wing Flapping: They flap their wings 200 times per second while collecting honey, which makes a 'bhoop' sound.
    • 5 Eyes: Bees have 3 small eyes (Ocelli) in addition to the normal eyes, located on the top of the head.

    Communication System
When bees find new food, they inform other bees about the location through a special dance (Waggle Dance).

Roles of the Queen Honey Bee and Lifespan
    • Reproduction
    • Colony Cohesion
    • Hive Succession
    Queen Honey Bee Lifespan
A queen bee can live up to 5 years and lays about two to two and a half thousand eggs per day.

    The Architecture of Nature
    • Hexagonal Nest: Bees build their hives in a perfect hexagonal shape to store maximum honey with the least amount of wax.
    • Role in Pollination: Bees are the main means of pollination, which is very important in increasing the production of fruits and crops.
    • Types of Bees: There are more than 20,000 species of bees in the world. Generally they are social and live in groups.
    Do Honey Bees Sleep?
Yes, each day honeybees usually sleep for about five to eight hours. A bee is considered to be sleeping when its antennae are still, head is nestled into the body, and breathing is irregular. During this time bees are less sensitive to external stimuli.
